Military time chart

Midnight to noon is unchanged apart from a leading zero. From 1:00 PM onward, add 12 to the hour. Minutes never change.

  midnight       → 0000
  1:00 AM–11:59  → 0100–1159
  12:00 PM       → 1200
  1:00 PM+       → hour + 12, e.g. 5 PM → 1700

  1200        → 12:00 PM
  1300+       → hour − 12, PM

5:30 PM  → 5 + 12 = 17 → 1730
2145     → 21 − 12 = 9 → 9:45 PM

Military time removes the AM/PM ambiguity that causes most time card mistakes — an overnight shift written as 10:00 to 6:00 could be eight hours or twenty. Written as 2200 to 0600 there is only one reading. Every calculator on this site can display 24-hour time: switch the clock format in the settings panel on any tool page.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both are used, but 0000 is the standard start of a new day. 2400 is sometimes written to mean the end of the previous day.

Does military time use a colon?

Strictly no — 1730, spoken 'seventeen thirty'. Many workplaces write 17:30 instead, which means the same thing.

How do I say 0800?

'Zero eight hundred hours'. Times with minutes are read as digits, so 0815 is 'zero eight fifteen'.
