The method is the same one a payroll clerk uses, done with exact minutes:

worked = (clock out − clock in) − unpaid break

9:00 AM → 5:30 PM   = 8:30 gross
unpaid break        = 0:30
worked              = 8:00 = 8.00 decimal hours

Times are handled as minutes since midnight, so overnight shifts, midnight crossings and daylight-saving changes never distort the arithmetic. If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time, the shift is treated as ending the next day and the page tells you so.

Tuesday   8:45 AM → 5:15 PM   break 45m  = 7:45

Total                                   15:45
Decimal                                 15.75

Totals are summed from raw minutes and converted to decimal once, so rounded daily displays never drift away from the true total.

Does this subtract my lunch automatically?

No. Enter only the break time you want deducted from your worked hours. Whether a break is paid or unpaid depends on your employer and contract.

How do I calculate an overnight shift?

Just enter the real times, for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The shift is treated as ending the next day and totals 8 hours. Use the 'ends next day' toggle for a full 24-hour shift.

What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal?

7.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. The decimal hours calculator converts in both directions.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. Times stay in your browser tab and disappear when you close it. Only display preferences are kept on your device.

This calculator applies only the times and break minutes you enter. It does not decide which breaks are payable, which rounding practice your employer uses, or when overtime is owed. Those depend on your employer, contract, classification and jurisdiction.
